HAPPY AND SAFE DOGS AND CATS – Promoting Responsible Pet Guardianship

To promote improved responsible pet guardianship across all communities, Advancing the Interests of Animals (AIA) has launched a novel pilot project in the Coachella Valley’s Spanish-speaking communities. Currently underway is a multi-media program to provide information and educational material about optimal care of companion animals. Using radio PSAs, informational leaflets and newspaper articles, all in Spanish, AIA is providing critical information about the proper care of companion animals, such as the importance of spaying and neutering dogs and cats, the value of adopting pets instead of buying them, and vaccinations. A pre and post survey measuring practices and beliefs about animal care will help to determine the effectiveness of the project. The lessons learned from this project will be utilized to create expanded campaigns in other regions.

Every year millions of adoptable companion animals are euthanized due to overpopulation. Not only is this a heartbreaking ongoing tragedy, it is also a huge financial cost to cities and those responsible for animal services. In addition, many animals are unnecessarily subjected to neglect and abuse at the hands of uncaring people.

In 2011, non-profit organization, Desert Paws became Advancing the Interests of Animals (AIA) with the expanded mission of improving the lives of animals and encouraging increased compassion and respect for all living beings. AIA is dedicated to the belief that all animals, domesticated and wild, deserve to be treated with compassion and respect.
