Pets and people in LA: Useful ideas for the fire crisis

For those affected by the Los Angeles wildfires that continue to ravage through communities there, AIA’s heart goes out to you and your loved ones. We wanted to take this moment to remind pet owners in the area of the safest ways to handle the deteriorated air quality for both you and your beloved pets.

Do not drink or cook with the tap water: use only bottled water for you and your pets. Remember this applies as well to ice making, washing dishes and brushing your teeth.

–      In order to protect your pets’ lungs:
–      Keep your cats indoors, and entertain them inside.
–      Dogs should also only exercise and play indoors, only let them outside to relieve themselves!
–      If you have any “outdoor pets” bring them inside to a room with good ventilation (ie: garage, bathroom)
–      Ensure your interiors are free of items harmful to pets since everyone will be sharing the space in a new way.
–      In addition, have an evacuation plan and kit ready for your pet in case you need to evacuate on short notice. See below for what should be included in your kit:

PET EVACUATION KIT:

–      Ensure first that your pets have an up-to-date ID tag
–      Food, treats, and clean water
–      Two bowls for eating & drinking water
–      Medical records and any medications your pet may need.
–      Leash & collar
–      Pet carrier (most shelters require your pet to be in one)
–      A toy/item that could help lower your pet’s stress level.
